Efficacy of Physical Therapy after Intra-Articular Steroid Injection in Patients with Adhesive Capsulitis of the Hip Joint

Abstract
|
|
|
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of physical therapy after intra-articular steroid injection for treating adhesive capsulitis of the hip joint.
Materials and Methods: From January 2018 to December 2020, among 192 patients diagnosed with adhesive capsulitis of the hip joint, 97 patients selected through a retrospective case-control study considering age and sex, received intra-articular steroid injection (Group A, 51 patients) and non-injection group (Group B, 46 patients).
The compliance of physical therapy, Numeric Rating Scale (NRS) and range of joint motion in each group at each treatment time point were compared.
Results: Patient compliance was significantly higher in Group A: 81.3% in Group A and 70.7% in Group B (p=0.0006). The NRS decreased from 6.4 to 1.4 in Group A and from 6.7 to 1.9 in Group B at the initial visit and at the one-year follow-up, respectively. The NRS was significantly lower at the one-month (p<0.0001), three-month (p<0.0001), six-month (p<0.0001), and one-year (p=0.0006) follow-ups. The range of motion of the joint increased from 47.5 to 85.8 degrees in Group A and from 48.1 to 81.8 degrees in Group B at the initial visit and at the one-year follow-up, respectively. The range of motion was significantly higher at the one-month (p<0.0001), three-month (p<0.0001), six-month (p<0.0001), and one-year (p=0.0014) follow-ups.
Conclusion: In patients with adhesive capsulitis of the hip joint, physical therapy after intra-articular steroid injection therapy is considered a useful treatment method that can quickly reduce pain with high patients compliance and increase the range of motion of the joint, and obtain high patient satisfaction.
